Smt. Vijayatai Gaonkar was devoted to children's education. She firmly believed that the children should Be imparted good quality education and instill high values in their formative years which makes a lasting impression on the young minds. Vijayatai was born on 3rd October 1929 in Tarkarli (Malvan). Her maiden name was Meerabai Nare. She received her primary education in Poybavdi Municipal School Parel and matriculated from Dr. Shirodkar High School Parel.
Vijayatai married Shri H. D. Gaonkar in 1945. She became the Director of Shishuvikas and Parel Primary school in 1955.
She was instrumental in establishing the ladies wing in Kshatrakulotpanna Maratha Samaj. She started many events such as Kojagiri Pournima, Matrudin, Haldi KumKum so that women could get together. She also arranged educational field visits and Anandmela so that the women could display their art and craft and culinary skills. 'Prerna' an annual magazine was initiated to bring out writing kills.
Vijayatai was awarded the Best Teacher by Government of Maharashtra in 1975. She was also elected as corporator in the Bombay Municipal Corporation.
She was an active participant in establishing Dr. Shirodkar Education Society in 1977 and later H. D. Gaonkar Education Sankul at Borivali.
Vijayatai passed away on 23rd May 2004 after leading an exemplary selfless life dedicated to educating the children and serving the people. She will always be remembered and revered as a leading educationist and caring personality.
